Think Chin Chin meets Mr Miyagi. This very hip Thai restaurant has been open on South Yarra‘s busy Malvern Road for almost twelve months, and Rock Sugar have gone from strength to strength, recently opened a courtyard.
Rock Sugar was the brain child of owner Nikon Souphan and his front of house manager, Simon Tammesild (formerly of Mr Miyagi) and distinguished chef Kam McManamey (formerly of South Wharf’s BangPop and Brotherambo). The food is great, the cocktails incredibly inventive and the atmosphere, very relaxed.
No Thai menu would be complete without great curries, salads and spring rolls. Our favourite dish was the Massaman Curry with 18 hour cooked beef shin, peanuts, potato, coriander and pickled shallots.
If you’re chilling out with friends, we would suggest the small plates to share. Of note is the spiced tuna tartare, beautifully presented on a lime rice cracker, the fried chicken ribs with red nam jim, chicken and prawn dumplngs and of course the crispy pork belly steamed buns.
And, to keep the conversation lively they’ve got a large selection of specialty cocktails, including our favourite, the rocking banana espresso martini.
